Webinar Synopsis

This BAM Fellows Masterclass explores the rich potential of historical methods for advancing management and organizational research. Led by Prof. Stephanie Decker, participants will discover how historical approaches offer unique pathways to theoretical development and empirical insight. The masterclass will examine multiple dimensions of historical research—from using history as an empirical setting to employing historiography as a theoretical resource.

Prof. Decker will share practical methodological insights touching on archival research techniques, historical triangulation, and critical source interpretation. Drawing on her extensive editorial experience with leading journals such as Business History, she will also provide valuable guidance on publishing historical research in both management and business history outlets.

Professor Stephanie Decker

Co-Vice Chair: Research and Publications

Stephanie Decker, FAcSS, is Professor of Strategy and Deputy Dean at Birmingham Business School. She has contributed substantially to interdisciplinary research that draws on historical knowledge to expand and problematise management knowledge.

This research stream was recognised in the REF 2022 panel report for its contribution to the theoretical sophistication of business history. Her work spans methodological and theoretical issues, as well as empirical research on the role of international business in global contexts that are often underrepresented in business research, such as Africa. She has been joint editor-in-chief of Business History since 2020.

As co-Vice Chair for Research & Publications at the British Academy of Management, she has developed BAM’s Open Access strategy to support the continued excellence of our journals, British Journal of Management and International Journal of Management Reviews, as well as supporting the further development of the BAM research grants scheme.

She co-authored the BAM Guide to Decolonizing the Business School Curriculum with the BAM Vice Chair for Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity & Respect and continues to champion interdisciplinary research in business, management and beyond

Professor Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki FBAM

Chaired Professor of International Business, University of Vienna, Austria

Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki, BA, PhD is Chaired Professor of International Business and Head of the Department of Marketing and International Business at the University of Vienna, Austria. She is also Visiting Professor at Leeds University Business School, UK.

Before she joined the University of Vienna, Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki was Professor of International Business at the University of Leeds, UK. She holds a PhD from the University of Strathclyde, UK where she subsequently remained as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. Her doctoral studies were supported by the Greek State Scholarships Foundation, while her Post-doctoral research was funded by the Economics and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK.

Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki currently serves as Associate Editor in the British Journal of Management. Her research interests refer to qualitative research in International Business; SME and family firm internationalization and international entrepreneurship. She also seeks to understand and problematize the role of time, context and space in International Business theorizing. She has published in highly ranked academic journals including the Academy of Management ReviewBritish Journal of ManagementEntrepreneurship Theory and PracticeJournal of International Business StudiesJournal of World Business and Journal of Management Studies.

Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki has been awarded the Medal for Research of the British Academy of Management (BAM) in 2023. In 2021, she received the prestigious Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) Decade Award for her co-authored paper entitled “Theorising from Case Studies: Towards a Pluralist Future for International Business Research”. She is regularly invited as a guest Professor and keynote speaker at leading international universities and conferences and provides supervision for PhD Theses.

Payment for the event must be received before the start date of the event concerned. Access will not be permitted to the event if full payment has not been received. 

Cancellations 

  • Cancellations received within 14 days of booking your place on the event will receive a full refund. 

  • Cancellations received after the 14-day cancellation period and later than 14 days before the start date of the event will not be eligible for a refund.  

  • Although we endeavour to run all events as advertised, BAM reserves the right to cancel any event if, for example, there are not enough people to justify running the event or if other significant unforeseen circumstances arise.

To cancel a booking a cancellation request must be submitted via your BAM Account, to do this:

  • Under 'Upcoming Events' will be the booking, please click Cancel Booking
