How do elites engage in philanthropy? Why do elites engage in philanthropy? What are the consequences of elite philanthropy? In this webinar, Professors Charles Harvey and Mairi Maclean address one of the most fundamental grand challenges of our troubled age.
In this webinar, Professors Charles Harvey and Mairi Maclean address one of the most fundamental grand challenges of our troubled age. They ask whether, in a world riven by high and rising inequalities of income and wealth, entrepreneurial philanthropy – the pursuit by entrepreneurs on a not-for profit basis of big social objectives through active investment of their economic, cultural, social and symbolic resources – is a key part of the solution or a major contributor to the problem. In this talk, based on extensive research, original theorization and a critical reading of the literature, they pose and answer three related questions. How do elites engage in philanthropy? Why do elites engage in philanthropy? What are the consequences of elite philanthropy? They conclude that the world remains far removed from the ideal of effective philanthropy: of spending billions of the ‘surplus dollars’ of the global entrepreneurial elite where it is most needed, on things that are most needed, for people most in need. Entrepreneurial philanthropy in its modern form has thus far failed to deliver on the large promises it makes.
Please note, this webinar will not be recorded.
