The British Academy of Management and the ESRC-funded Engaged Scholarship Learning Lab at Manchester Metropolitan University is delighted to launch a free Practising Engaged Scholarship webinar series on 13th January 2022 with a session from the originator of Engaged Scholarship, Professor Andrew Van de Ven.
We know that far too little management research is actually used. Engaged Scholarship is an approach to research designed to change that. It involves working with stakeholders to identify real world problems, theorising what may be causing the problem and then subjecting that theory to research. If we involve practitioners or policy makers in the design of research problems and processes, aren’t they much more likely to see our research as relevant and valid? Professor Van de Ven will outline his method and share his experience of putting it to work. He will also talk to Professor Julia Rouse, Director of the Engaged Scholarship Learning Lab, about the programme of events coming up in 2022 to build the capacity of BAM researchers in Engaged Scholarship.

Andrew H. Van de Ven is Professor Emeritus in the Carlson School of the University of Minnesota. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1972, and taught at Kent State Univ. and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania before that. At the Carlson School he teaches courses on managing organizational change and innovation and on engaged scholarship research methods.
Van de Ven's books and journal articles over the years have dealt with the Nominal Group Technique, organization design and assessment, inter-organizational relationships, organizational innovation and change, and engaged scholarship research methods. He is co-author of 15 books, including: The Innovation Journey (1999, 2008), Organization Change and Innovation Processes (2000), Engaged Scholarship (2007), and the Oxford Handbook of Organizational Change and Innovation (1st ed. 2004; 2nd ed. 2021, all published by Oxford Univ. Press.
During 2000-2001 Van de Ven was President of the Academy of Management, and he was founding editor of Academy of Management Discoveries (2012-2017). He also served on the Board of Directors of Ascension Health System from 2010 – 2014, the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider in the U.S. He received the Distinguished Career Service Award from the Academy of Management in 2020.

Julia Rouse is a Professor in Entrepreneurship in the Centre for Decent Work and Productivity at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is Director of the ESRC-funded Good Employment Learning Lab that is working with stakeholders to learn how to develop line manager’s people management skills in Greater Manchester and the Adult Social Care sector. GELL is using an Engaged Scholarship methodology and also running the Engaged Scholarship Learning Lab to foster skills and a community of practice in Engaged Scholarship. Julia’s research advances feminist and critical realist approaches to researching change in entrepreneurship and organisations. As her work is always focused on the marginalised, she describes herself as an Engaged-Activist Scholar.
