Research Culture Awards 2024 Runner up Diverse Reserach Activity June24.png

We would like to congratulate BAM Council Member Dr Maria Hussain, PhD, SFHEA, CMBE, BERA', who's latest research
dissemination exhibition in collaboration with Leeds City Museum 'Muslims in the North' was awarded Runner Up in the 'Diverse Forms of Research Activity' category at the University of Leeds Research Culture Award!

The presentation, which took place on 24th June 2024 saw Dr Hussain's exhibition narrowly pipped to the post by 'Gair Wood: a research and teaching woodland for all', a project championing the culture of collaboration behind the UK’s first University-hosted experimental woodland creation project.

The 'Muslims of the North' exhibition features stories of "pioneering work" by the Islamic community in the fields of commerce, healthcare, law and research. Among the people to feature in the exhibition at Leeds City Museum are Nazir Afzal, the former Chief Crown Prosecutor of North West England, and Dr Mumtaz Patel, a consultant nephrologist and vice president for Education and Training at the Royal College of Physicians.

Feedback from the Research Culture Award judges included:

This project is an exciting and innovative approach to showcase the contributions of Muslims in the North to the wider public. The exhibition clearly has an impact and was picked up by many media outlets, and the team has many goals to ensure that this work continues to have an impact.

This is a strong example of the benefits of creative approaches to research activity, demonstrating the importance of 'non-traditional' outputs for recognition of the diverse people involved in research, as well as in this project's aim of tackling negative stereotypes. The attention to evidence (e.g. through survey data) was clear throughout, as was the links between this activity and wider strategic goals for research culture. The plans for the future were particularly clear, including a range of different approaches to developing future impact/activity.
