At the BAM2024 Conference, held at Nottingham Trent University on 6th September 2024, the Performance Management SIG had the honour of conducting a thought-provoking Professional Development Workshop in person.

The workshop "Exploring the Role, Use, and Challenges of Using AI in Performance Management" examined the significant relevance of AI in today's rapidly evolving business landscape. The workshop began with Jonathan Liu welcoming the attendees and chaired the session. The first session focused on the "Use of AI in HR" led by Dr Sree Lekshmi Sreekumaran Nair, Global Banking School, which covered the aspects of different HR areas that would be impacted by the use of AI in areas such as recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management and compensation management followed by Prof. Mark NK Saunders on the presentation on "Using AI in Developing Research Strategies…Proceed with Caution" which outlined how ChatGPT can make mistakes if we are not cautious and not using the correct prompt.

Pippa Furey, Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Practice and Emergency Care at Nottingham Trent University, led the third session, highlighting AI's role in healthcare education. The session outlined the different areas in healthcare that can benefit from the integration of AI. We welcomed delegates of around 20 who enriched the workshop with their valuable contribution. After the presentation, we had a breakout group session in which audiences were divided into small groups to discuss the four critical questions for discussion which included

  1. What challenges and opportunities exist in using AI and developing new theories in academic research and discipline?
  2. What future provisions and actions do you think are necessary to understand the impact of AI in organisations/public services?
  3. How can the industry, organisations, and the academic community collaborate to leverage AI's benefits?

The workshop generated exciting discussion, as the audience had different views on the use of AI, mainly the negative sides. There is a need to develop new theories in academic research and discipline. As AI is a new area, more empirical research is needed to better understand the positive and negative sides. The main discussion was around the ethical and legal side of using AI and how organisations can use it without fear.
